Home-Start Carmarthen-Llanelli
Home-Start Carmarthen-Llanelli explain all about what they do for families in the area:
"Home-Start, a national charity established in 1973 works with 24,000 families and 54,000 children each year, is recognised as the UK’s leading family support organisation. This free support extends to more than 320 communities across the UK, and with the British Forces in Germany and Cyprus.
Family Support
Home-Start Carmarthen-Llanelli was established in 2000 and covers the whole of Carmarthenshire except for the Amman Valley, and last year we supported 84 families and 168 children. We currently have 47 home-visiting volunteers who spend a couple of hours a week helping parents who have at least one child under the age of five. Our volunteers support families facing a variety of difficulties including:
- Loneliness
- Isolation
- Postnatal illness
- Disabilities
- Ill health
- Relationship difficulties
- Multiple births
- Bereavement
They do this by maybe spending time with a young parent, helping to build their confidence as they adapt to life with a small baby, sharing an outing with a family who finds getting out of the house difficult. The visits might involve offering an extra pair of hands to a family with several children or providing a listening ear to a mother who is suffering from postnatal illness.
Home-Start support is free, confidential and non-judgemental. If you have a child under the age of five and feel that you could benefit from a little extra help you can either have a chat with your Health Visitor about the support we offer or you can contact us direct on the number below.
Volunteering Opportunities
Our volunteers are just ordinary people who know how tough bringing up children can be. You don’t need to be a super nanny to help parents with young children. If you’ve got through the early days, why not volunteer your experience to help someone else? Real people with real parenting experience can make a real difference to families in need. If you can spare 2 hours or more a week we would love to hear from you. In return you will receive comprehensive training, regular staff support and supervision, reimbursement of travel expenses, the opportunity for self-development and the chance to meet new friends.
Community Work
Our Organisers work hard in the community to raise the profile of Home-Start and the support that we offer. If you arrange group meetings within your community and would like one of our Organisers to come and give a short presentation, then please contact us.

I am a Home-Start volunteer and would like to encourage anyone who is thinking of being one to go for it.
It is a great feeling being able to help others and I have met some wonderful people during my time with Home-Start.
